A new graffiti of the well known street artist Banksy appeared last 14th May 2012 on Whymark Avenue on the side of Poundland (a cheap department store). The picture is of a young boy using a sewing machine to make Union Jack bunting. It is a very detailed and cleverly made stencil with real bunting attached to it. It is believed to be a comment on the celebrations of the summer Olympics and Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Initially the attribution to Banksy was only a supposition of passers-by due to the similar style and good realisation, it then became certain when an image of the graffiti was uploaded onto Banksy official site, along with two other new images related to the Olympics. The graffiti is on a private property so it is a decision of the owner whether to cover it up and the council would only intervene in the case of an offensive image. Moreover the Haringey Council has commented that it does not regard the image as offensive and is committed to keeping the picture. The wall owners (Poundland) are happy to keep the image and so it was covered with Plexiglas soon after it’s appearing. The image has been welcomed by most of the surrounding inhabitants and hundreds have travelled to the site to see and take pictures of the graffiti. The last Banksy image in Haringey was on Tottenham High Road and appeared in September 2009. It was of two children playing under a No Ball Games sign. 

Un nuovo graffito del noto street artist Banksy è apparso lo scorso 14 maggio 2012 su Whymark Avenue, sul lato dell’economico negozio Poundland. L’immagine, un giovane impegnato a cucire bandierine dello Union Jack, è resa con efficace dettaglio e applicata con grande precisione (la buona realizzazione e il messaggio dell’opera hanno subito fatto pensare agli abitanti che fosse opera di Banksy, successivamente un’immagine del graffito è stata caricata sul sito ufficiale di Banksy, confermando così le supposizioni). Le bandierine sono reali e attaccate al graffito, piuttosto che disegnate. Il messaggio è interpretato come un commento sui numerosi festeggiamenti per le Olimpiadi di Londra e il sessantesimo anniversario della Regina (diamante). Il graffito si trova collocato su una proprietà privata, pertanto la decisione se coprire o meno l’immagine sta al proprietario, in quanto il comune interverrebbe soltanto nel caso di un immagine ritenuta offensiva. Per di più il Comune di Haringey ha espresso che non trova il graffito offensivo e anzi è favorevole a conservare e proteggere l’immagine. I proprietari del muro (Poundland) sono felici di tenere l’immagine ed è quindi stata coperta con una lastra di Plexiglas. Il graffito è stato accolto volentieri da gran parte degli abitanti ed in centinaia sono giunti a vedere e fotografare il nuovo arrivato. L’ultimo graffito di Banksy comparso nel comune di Haringey è stato su Tottenham High Road nel settembre del 2009. L’immagine mostrava due bambini che giocano sotto un segnale di No Ball Games (no giochi con il pallone).
